Description - Flexible Pipe Technology JIP
The Flexible Pipe Technology JIP, with the primary objective to update the API 17J/17B & ISO 13628-2/-11 unbonded flexible pipe standards (Specification and Recommended Practice) kicked off in January 2005.
The industry standards for unbonded flexible pipe design, API Spec 17J and API RP 17B, were developed in their current form through two JIPs, managed by MCS Kenny, from 1994 to 1998. Since original publication of these documents another generation of company specifications and bespoke project specifications that give significant supplementary requirements to Spec 17J have become prevalent. These supplementary requirements have arisen because of significant new learnings in areas such as annulus environments, wire fatigue, PA11 degradation and increased operational experience and failure histories.
Failure to significantly revise and update the 17J/17B flexible pipe standards to reflect these supplementary requirements threatens their pre-eminence in the industry. Such a development is clearly not in the interests of either operators or suppliers.
This JIP will undertake a complete review of current flexible pipe technology, including 17J/17B standards, in light of recent industry operational experiences, anticipated future needs and on-going developments in the technology. The impetus for initiating the JIP now is that the work proposed will take at least 2 years to impact on the flexible pipe industry. The following are the key objectives of the JIP:
- Identify gaps between the current versions of the standards and the state-of-practice
- Liaise with on-going industry initiatives
- Carry out detailed studies on specific topics that require in depth investigation prior to achieving an industry consensus
- Develop an industry consensus on required changes/updates
- Incorporate agreed changes into new revisions of the API and ISO standards, and submit the standards to API/ISO for balloting
The Flexible Pipe Technology JIP scope of work, in addition to updating 17J/17B, will also produce a number of additional deliverables in the form of reports on key issues in flexible pipe technology. It is intended that these additional reports will provide substantial background information on the key issues, including detailed descriptions on the state of art in flexible pipe technology.
The Flexible Pipe Technology JIP kicked off in January 2005 in Galway and is already supported by 10 participating companies with a number of other companies also expected to join.
